How We Ran This Comparison

One of our team members ran both phases back to back: 60 days of cold showers, then 60 days of cold plunging. The shower phase meant finishing each shower with 2-3 minutes at full cold, as low as the tap would go (around 58-62°F in summer, closer to 50-55°F when the weather cooled down). We used a chiller-equipped tub for most of this phase, and once it was set up, the daily experience was actually pretty easy. The tub was always at temperature, so the only barrier was walking out and getting in. Simple.

The two weeks we ran without the chiller, relying on ice instead, told a different story. One thing that genuinely caught us off guard: the research on cold plunging and strength training is more nuanced than the wellness world tends to acknowledge. There’s decent evidence that plunging immediately after resistance training might blunt some of the hypertrophy signalling.
